J.Evans Sherfield |
| Subject: Confederate Veteran Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 20:13:00 -0500 From: Joe David To: weldon@centex.net Hi Sharon I just saw the listing of Mills County Veterans and think it is a great idea. My ggf was J. Evans Sherfield (it was originally Sheffield but he changed it to Sherfield for some unknown reason). He is buried at Williams Ranch Cemetery. Evans (as he was known) enlisted 27 Dec 1863 at Homer, Tx and served in Co. "D" (Anderson's Company), 22nd Regiment(Hubbard's Regiment), Walker's Division, Walls Brigade. One of the individual's who signed his application for a pension was T.G. Vines who said he served throughout the war with him and knew that he served in Co. "D". This may be the Thomas G. Vines listed on the Website (I have long wondered if this T.G. Vines had a son John who married Letha Tefertiller, sister of my gf Elbert C. Tefertiller). J. Evans Sherfield was born 8 Sept 1846 in Conecuh Co, AL and died 17 Mar 1931 in Mills Co TX. The Rueben A. Harris listed is his brother-in-law. Harris married Nancy Elmyra Green, sister of Mary Elizabeth Green, wife of J. Evans Sherfield. My info shows Rueben A. Harris as being born Jan. 12, 1840. I realize this is more than you need. Thanks, Joe David jdavid@airmail.net |

| Subject: SHERFIELD obits Date: Sun, 27 Sep 1998 17:10:02 -0500 From: Joe David Organization: Home To: weldon@centex.net Hi Sharon Hope everything is fine with you and yours. I have been meaning for sometime to send you some obits of Mills Co relatives of mine. The first two are of J.Evans Sherfield and wife Mary Elizabeth Green. I assume they are both from the Eagle and appear to be photocopies of what looks like microfilm. My Mother obtained them and she was somewhat lax in documenting sources. The first is a transcribed copy of the obit for Mrs. Sherfield who died 26 Dec 1928 and second that of J. Evans Sherfield who died 17 Mar 1931. By the way, there is a typo on the death certificate info you have posted about him. It says 1921 instead of 1931. ( Note: Oops! I made correction) |

It is interesting they spelled her name Sheffield and his Sherfield.
Also it is not true he located in Mills county over 50 years ago(of
1931). He and family probably arrived around 1894/95. They were still in
Ok Indian Territory on 28 Feb 1891 where my Grandmother Ava Bell was
born. More later. Joe |

It is at "Joe David Home Page" ". Please add to the Researchers page or wherever. I am attaching a picture of a reunion of Confederate veterans that took place in Goldthwaite in 1924. This is a scan of the small original. I have an enlargement that I will scan later and see if it is better. The caption on the original says "38th U.C. Re-Union 7-22,23,24 1924 Goldthwaite, Texas". I have noted my ggf sitting in the center. There is also a copy in the graphics folder at my website with same filename.
