Subject: Addition to Veteran's Page Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 20:39:57 -0500 From: "RONNIE SMITH" Email address is no longer working To: weldon@centex.net Sharon- I would like to add my great-great grandfather James Dickerson Sexton to the list of Civil War veterans on the Mills County site. He died in 1909 in Goldthwaite and is buried at the Goldthwaite Cemetery. The following biography I found is a book called "Well Known Confederate Veterans and Their War Records" published in 1907 in New Orleans by Wm. E. Mickle: SEXTON, J. D., Goldthwaite, Texas; b. Jan. 18, 1830; e. Dec. 17, 1861; pr. Co. B., 7th Miss. Inf.; afterwards trans. to Forrest's Cav; retired in the Fall of 1863 on account of wounds; Commander Jeff Davis Camp No. 117. From records that I got from the National Archives he retired from the army as a 2nd Lt., Co B, 1st Regiment of the Mississippi Partisan Rangers which were under the command of General Forrest. His name also appears on the Confederate monument on the courthouse lawn in Goldthwaite. I have a very old picture of James D. Sexton and what appears to be a Confederate veteran gathering of some sort, probably taken in Goldthwaite. Perhaps when you've recovered I could send you a copy and you might be able to help me determine if it was taken in Goldthwaite and what year it was taken. Thanks for your help. Ronnie Smith |

In the Mills County Memories, compiled and copyrighted by the Mills County Historical Commission, 1994 on page 145, J. D. Sexton is listed among the names of "Civil War Veterans who resided in Mills County, " "The Men of Jeff Davis Camp #117 U.C.V."
