KILLED ON OKINAWA (Picture of James Thomas Owens in uniform) James Thomas Owens, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Owens, was born December 24, 1925. He volunteered for Army service in July, 1944. He received his basic training at Camp Walters, Texas. He went to Fort Ord, California, December 21, 1944 and sailed a few days later. He stayed in the Marainas Islands a short time and from there to the battle of Okinawa. He was killed exactly ten months after being received in the Army. Mr. and Mrs. Owens have recently received the Purple Heart and Infantryman Badge of Merit awarded posthumously. The following letter was received by Mrs. Owens from James' Company Commander: Okinawa, China, July 7, 1945 My Dear Mrs. Owens; In all sincerity and humility of myself and his comrades, our wish to extend to you on behalf deepest sympathy in the recent loss of the one you hold so dear. Realizing that the brief War Department notification does not give the many facts you want to know it would please me to be of some service in giving a little more detail. James was killed on the 24th of May 1945 by a bullet from an enemy sniper. It happened early in the morning as the Company was preparing for the day. He died instantly and suffered no pain. James was buried in the 7th Division Cemetery on Okinawa Island with full military honors and in accordance with the rites of his faith. The cemetery is a beautiful spot overlooking the sea from high on the side of a hill. There are spacious green lawns surrounded by a white picket fence. Each grave has its own individual headstone with the man's name carved on it. The cemetery is given the best of care each day by attendants to make sure it will always remain the same beautiful spot. James was fine and capable soldier, one of the best known and best liked men in the Company. His good humor and quick wit made him a favorite among his comrades. His departure will leave a gap that will never be filled. Again, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy, and if I can be of any service in the future, please do not hesitate to write me. Sincerely yours, Raymond L. Spears, 1st. Lt. Commanding -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-awars-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= |
