when I came across this record for J. C. Peck on May 6, 1998

J. C. Peck was nominated and appointed my True and lawful deputy on Aug 9, 1888 signed G. W. Cunningham, Sheriff of Mills County, State of Texas.
On Page 227: I, J. C. Peck Swear that I am a citizen of the State of Texas and have not fought a duel with a deadly weapon, nor sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with a deadly weapon, nor acted as a second for a duel with deadly weapons, nor directly or indirectly paid, offered or promised to pay, contribute any money or valuable thing or promised a public office or employment as a reward to secure my appointment, so help me God. Signed Aug 9, 1888 witness Phil H. Clements, County Clerk, Mills County.
