In the August 1913 meeting of the Jeff Davis Camp, #117, UCV, it was decided that Rev. D. L. Haralson, would write the Goldthwaite Eagle-Mullin Enterprise to make a statement of their views and wishes for the forthcoming Mounument.

CONFEDERATE MONUMENT

I was instructed by our camp, at its meeting last Saturday, to make a statement of our views with reference to the contemplated monument, to be published in the county papers.

We do not think that too much ought to be expended on it. This, however, we will leave with the citizens who have kindly undertaken that work for us. We prefer that it should not be to tall, but that there should be sufficient space near the base for the record of the names of all the members of our camp. We know that this is costly, but we want to pay for this part of the work ourselves, hence it was agreed that each member of the camp should make such a contribution as would place his own record there. A large percent of our camp has already passed over the river, but nearly all of these have friends or relatives here who we know would gladly do this work for them, and if there are any that can not be provided for in this way, the camp will do it. So that every name may be placed on this monument. We want this to commemorate the private soldier, so we recommend that the rank be left off and that we just give the name, company and regiment to which the comrade belonged.

Our camp book with the roll was burned in the old court house, so it will be hard for us to get up all of these names and hence, we ask the entire citizenship of this county to assist us in this work. If you know the name of any person who at any time belonged to our camp and whom you think we may have forgotten, send it in to our Adjutant, L. G. Blackburn with the letter of his company, number of his regiment and we will see that it is attended to.

Besides this special work, we are going to contribute all we can to the general fund. We would like for the work to be done by November next and are making our contributions payable at this time. We shall not claim, as we shall not deserve that honor of building this monument. We want that bestowed upon our friends upon whom we know that the burden will fall, and we want them to make such record on it as will set forth this fact.

And now, to us and to all who are friendly to this move; Let's make this prominent; think about it: talk about it: work at it: If you have anything or know anything that will contribute to its advancement, come to the meeting of our camp, tell us about it and let us rejoice together over its early completion.

Yours in memory of many dead and few living.

D.L. Haralson
