LAST MILLS COUNTY CONFEDERATE VETERAN LAID TO REST HERE

After several days of serious illness, death relieved its victim last night (Wednesday) T. S. Gerald, one of Mills County's oldest citizens.

Mr. Gerald would have been 89 years old at his next birthday in May. He served four years in the Confederate arm and was the last Confederate veteran in Mills County. Mrs. Gerald has also been critically ill with pneumonia and her life was despaired of yesterday.

T.S. Gerald was born in (sic) Amitte County, Miss., May 25, 1848. At an early age he moved to Texas, spending his stay here in Coryell, Hamilton and Mills counties. Since 1913 he has been one of the citizens of this county, who has been held in the highest esteem. His posterity is maintaining that high standard set by their parents.

He was married to Callie Martha Bateman, August 1, 1872, and to this union were born twelve children, two of whom died in infancy. There are the ten children living, 26 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

The children are; Ed and Tom of Canyon, Ray and Poke of Hamilton, Judge R. J., Dewey and Mrs. C.W. Batchelor of Goldthwaite , Mrs. W.D.. Hunter of Floresville, Mrs. J. W. Burney of Evant, and Mrs. A.L. Smith of Winters.

He was a member of the church of Christ for about 65 years, to which he was faithful to the end. Like Cornelius he feared God with all his house.

The funeral was conducted at the church of Christ building at 3 o'clock with burial in the I.O.O. F. cemetery. Evangelist (sic?) O. O. O. Newton of Pottsville and E.W. Stovall, minister of the church here officiating.

Pallbearers were: A.H. Smith, J.V. Cockrum, Walter Weatherby, J. R. Parker, Jim Brim and Elmer Horton.
