
![]() Secretary of Defense William Cohen has approved the Cold War Recognition Certificate to recognize and honor those who served in the nation’s defense during this highly turbulent time in United States history. There is no charge for a Cold War Recognition Certificate. Note that no medal has been authorized or issued for Cold War Recognition. Anyone - Veterans and Federal Government employees, who served the United States during the Cold War era (Sept. 2, 1945 to Dec. 26, 1991) in either a military or a civilian capacity with the War, Navy and Defense Departments, is eligible. |

Submit a copy Not the original of any official government document (Example: TDY, Leave, retirements, separation documents can be used) with Recipient's Name, Social Securtiy number/Military Service Number/Foreign Service Number and date of service during the Cold War Era. The certificate may be awarded posthumously to those whose relatives apply on their behalf but only one certificate will be issued. Sample Request Letter NOTE: In some cases, discharge Papers were filed in the Local Courthouse. You can get a photocopy of a discharge record that is on file at the Mills County. There are four books for service records or discharge's, You can email me and I will email you the book and page number if located. You can also check the "Mills County Memories" Page 145 thru 149 to see if the name is on file. In most cases, the member or his family can get a free copy of the record on file. Anyone who worked for the US Government any time during the period 2 Sep 45 to 26 Dec 91 is eligible. (You did not have to serve for the whole time, just any time during that period.), provided their service to the country was faithful and honorable. National Guard and Reservists are eligible, because their training time is paid for by the US Government. Yes, this applies to individuals who are not US citizens. Contractors and volunteers are not eligible. Those who are currently active duty military or civilian employees of the U.S. government are also eligible. Active duty military should apply through their chain of command. No one will receive two certificates, or more, even if they qualify both as a military and civilian employee. You can apply for relatives, living or deceased, as long as you can produce the required documentation. Someone must sign that each person's service was faithful and honorable. Back to top The program is scheduled to run for 10 years, so there is plenty of time to send in your request and supporting documentation. You have up to one year after requesting a certificate to supply the supporting documentation. It will take from 6 to 8 weeks after approval for the certificate to arrive. Certificates will contain only names, no ranks.
