Scientists in Boston announce the discovery of the ancient city of Akrotiri on the Greek isle of Thera. In Saigon, U. S. General Westmoreland requests that more U. S. soldiers be sent to Vietnam. In other news, the United Nations begin an observation of the Suez Canal. Meanwhile, Egyptian and Israeli forces exchange fire across the Suez Canal. A referendum in Puerto Rico bans statehood and independence from the United States.

Baseball great Mickey Mantle hits his 500th home run. St. Louis wins baseball´s World Series in the seventh game against Boston. The Green Bay Packers defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 at Super Bowl I held at the Los Angeles Coliseum. In basketball, Philadelphia defeats San Francisco for the National Basketball Association title. Billie Jean King and John Newcombe each win the U.S. national tennis title. Frenchman Robert Pingeon wins the Tour de France.
A horse named Proud Clarion wins the Kentucky Derby. The hourse is ridden by R. Ussery.
