In Washington D. C., the U. S. House of Representatives approves legislation to establish equal pay regardless of sex. General Maxwell Taylor replaces General Lauris Norstad as head of the U. S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hydrogen bomb testing in the Pacific illuminates the night sky from Hawaii to New Zealand. In other news, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev announces that the Soviet Union would defend China against any attacker. French President Charles De Gaulle officially declares Algeria´s independence from France.

The New York Yankees defeat the Giants, now of San Francisco, to take the World Series in baseball. Jackie Robinson is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In football, the Green Bay Packers become NFL Champions, defeating the New York Giants, 16-7. The Boston Celtics win their fourth straight NBA title, this time defeating the Los Angeles Lakers. Jack Nicklaus wins the U. S. Open Golf title. Dawn Fraser becomes the first woman to swim 100 meters in less than a minute. A horse named Decidedly wins the Kentucky Derby with jockey W. Hartack.
