In Moscow, the Soviets sign a 10­year military aid accord with North Korea. In Seoul, Korean leader General Chang resigns and is succeeded by General Pak. Soviet Primier Nikita Khrushchev ends troop reduction and increases the Soviet defense budget. In the United States, James Baldwin´s "Nobody Knows My Name" is published. Scientific research at the University of California, Berkeley uses radioactive dating to add millions of years to man´s existence. American author Ernest Hemingway is found dead in his home in Ketchum, Idaho.

The New York Yankees win the World Series in the fifth game against Cincinnati. The Packers shut out the Giants 37-0 for the NFL title. A.J. Foyt, Jr. wins the Indy 500 averaging 139.1 mph. Marvin Panch averages 150 mph and breaks the world 500-mile race record. Ty Cobb, the first player elected to Baseball Hall of Fame, dies. The Boston Celtics win the National Basketball Association Championship, after defeating St. Louis for the third year in a row. A horse named Carry Back wins the Kentucky Derby. The jockey is J. Sellers.
