 In Los Angeles, the Democratic Party nominates Senator John F. Kennedy
to run for President of the United States. Senator Lyndon Johnson of Texas is chosen
as Kennedy´s running mate. Vice president Richard Nixon easily wins the
nomination of the Republican party to run for President. In the Philadelphia, the
50-star U. S. flag makes its official debut at Independence Hall. In other news,
Katanga Premier Tshombe declares its independence and asks for aid from Belgium.
Ghana becomes a republic in the British Commonwealth and appoints Kwame Nkrumah as
president.

Sports
Pittsburgh wins the World Series in the seventh game against the
New York Yankees. More than 75,000 attend the opening of the 17th Olympics in
Squaw Valley, California. Carol Heiss wins the gold medal in figure skating. The
Boston Celtics win 59th game in season, after crushing Knicks. U.S. racer Johnson
breaks decathlon record at Olympics. For the fourth year in a row, Boston and St.
Louis play each other in the NBA Championships; Boston wins. A horse named
Venetian Way wins the Kentucky Derby. The jockey is W. Hartack.
