In New York, U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower proposes an interstate highway
system for civilian use and atomic defense. In Princeton, computers are made available for
rent by private industry. New York City police begin using a chemical test device to monitor
drunk drivers.  In other news, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. is appointed to head the U.S. delegation
to the United Nations. In Tunis, French Premier Mendes France proposes autonomy for Tunisia.
General Alfredo Stroessner is elected president of Paraguay. Great Britain ends its military
occupation of Egypt.

Sports
The New York Giants take the World Series in four games over the
Cleveland Indians. Detroit defeats Montreal to win Hockey´s Stanley cup.
Roger Bannister breaks four-minute mile (runs 3:59:4). Maureen Connolly wins
the women´s tennis title at Wmbledon. Babe Didrikson wins third U.S. Women´s
Open golf Championship. In the NBA, Minneapolis beats New York to retain the
championship for the third straight year.  In the NFL, Cleveland routs Detroit,
56-10. Rocky Marciano defeats Ezzard Charles twice this year, ending Charles´ career.
