Events
In the United States, President Harry Truman requests that
$260 million be spent to develop the hydrogen bomb. 
Foreign Relations Committee rules that Senator Joseph McCarthy's communist
allegations were not based in fact. The U. S. Senate General Douglas MacArthur is
appointed to head the United Nation forces in Korea. In London,
former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill warns of a third world
war. Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand decide to send troops
to Korea under the U. N. command.

Sports
New York takes the World Series in four games straight
against Philadelphia.  The Browns defeat the Rams 30-28 to win the
NFL title. Heavyweight Ezzard Charles defeats Joe Louis in his
comeback bid after 15 rounds. This win gains Charles universal
recognition as heavyweight champion. A. Louise Brough wins the
women's singles title at Wimbledon for the third straight year; Budge
Patty wins the men's title. In the NBA, Minneapolis wins over
Syracuse with George Mikan as the NBA scoring leader at 27.4 points per
game. "Middleground" wins the Kentucky Derby.
