The Cherokee Church of Christ has been serving
the community for over 100 years. The present property the church building rests
on was purchased on August 26, 1896, for the sum of $117.90. The building was
erected about 1904 or 1905. At later dates, an annex was added and then enlarged
to its present facilities. The first minister of the Cherokee Church of
Christ was Brother Schultz. John Randolph was one of the first elders, and Bill
Daughtery was one of the first deacons. Many preachers have served the
Cherokee congregation down through the years. Some of these men are: L.V. Nobles,
Brother Simpson, W. C. White, Will Swope, Harold Collard, Silas Howell, Grady
Pricer, Avery Lewis, Clem Hoover, Charlie Boyce, Henry McBroom, Jamie Hemphill,
Turney McKelvain, Tommy Turner, J. C. Bristo, Gene Linder, Harold Norrell, Rodney
Tedford, and Lester Duncan. Our present minister is Douglas Suggs who moved to
Cherokee in November of 1988. The church, which meets at Cherokee, has
no creed but the Bible and is working toward restoring New Testament Christianity.
Our aim is to glorify God in our worship and our lives. Through our love for each
other and our community, we strive to please our Creator.
We are active in supporting missionaries in the Philippines,
Eastern European Missions, preaching students, and in
the support of Cherokee Home for Children.
